When a flag becomes worn, faded, or tattered beyond repair, it should be retired with dignity and respect. At Robert John Lehman - Veterans of Foreign Wars - "VFW Post 10427", we are proud to help our community properly dispose of American flags in accordance with tradition and federal guidelines. How to Properly Dispose of an American Flag The United States Flag Code recommends that when a flag is no longer fit for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. Veterans organizations like the VFW, American Legion, and others hold ceremonial flag retirements to ensure this is done respectfully. If you are unable to retire your flag yourself, you can bring it to us, and we will ensure it is handled with the honor it deserves. Each year, nearly 68,800 students in sixth through eighth grades enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of more than $1.4 million in state and national awards. Each first place state winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first place winner wins $5,000! The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. In the mid 1970’s, seventy-eight veterans gathered in Leander, Texas to petition the Veterans of Foreign War National headquarters to establish a VFW Post in Leander, Texas. On 17 Apr 1975, VFW Post 10427 was chartered and activated. This group of Veterans worked together and put their skills to use and worked many hours obtaining a building for the Post. OUR STORY "The Robert John Lehman Post" In the mid 1970’s, seventy-eight veterans gathered in Leander, Texas to petition the Veterans of Foreign War National headquarters to establish a VFW Post in Leander, Texas. On 17 Apr 1975, VFW Post 10427 was chartered and activated. This group of Veterans worked together and put their skills to use and worked many hours obtaining a building for the Post. VFW Post 10427 was chartered 17 April 1975. Although there is not much history to be found or searched about Robert John Lehman he was one of 4 "Lehman Brothers" to have served in the military. It is told, at the time of the VFW Post 10427 Charter celebration, that a pact was made among the Charter members, that the first to die, the Post would be named for that fallen charter member. On 22 September 1975, Robert John Lehman passed away. Very little history is available for Robert John Lehman. VFW Post 10427 from Leander Texas works very hard to uphold all that it means to be a member of the VFW. For the Good of the Order the men and woman of VFW Post 10427 join with the community to support our active and returned troops helping in any way that we can. We should never have to be reminded what it means to be citizens of the United States Of America. There many reason to be thankful! Lift your head, stand proud and join our wonderful organization. The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves. In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations which would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000. Since then, the VFW's voice had been instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, creating a GI bill for the 20th century, the development of the national cemetery system and the fight for compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and for veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008, VFW won a long-fought victory with the passing of a GI Bill for the 21st Century, giving expanded educational benefits to America's active-duty service members, and members of the Guard and Reserves, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. The VFW also has fought for improving VA medical centers services for women veterans. Besides helping fund the creation of the Vietnam, Korean War, World War II and Women in Military Service memorials, the VFW in 2005 became the first veterans' organization to contribute to building the new Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial, which opened in November, 2010. Annually, the 2.1 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary contribute more than 11 million hours of volunteerism in the community, including participation in Make A Difference Day and National Volunteer Week. * A Technician 5th Grade was the same pay grade as a Corporal however a Corporal is a hard stripe junior NCO normally in charge of a team, squad or section. The Technician 5th Grade was a designation for a special skill set. Technician 5th Grade was somebody in the squad with as much time in service and grade as the Corporal, but there isn't two slots for a Corporal in the squad. The Technician grades were converted to Specialist Grades in 1948, the Technician 5th grade is the same grade as the Specialist (Formerly Specialist 4). which is the last of the Specialist (Sp4 to Sp9) grades. *
