A Letter From Your Commander
IAW National VFW By-Laws and guidance the last two months (re: Covid-19 pandemic and Post operations and elections) from the National VFW and Dept of Texas VFW, elections for Post officers were conducted Monday, May 25. The following officers were elected for the 2020-2021 VFW Year:
Commander: Dave Walden
Sr. Vice Commander: John Jowers
Jr. Vice Commander: Robert Beach
Quartermaster: Gene Davenport
3rd Yr Trustee: Jim Holliday
Eight members of the Post were elected to the House Committee. I don’t have those names in front of me--you know who you are. :)
It has been one of the highest honors of my life to serve as your Post Commander for the past year. I fully support Comrade Walden and the incoming leadership team and wish them the best success leading our Post. Our Post is in great shape financially and our standing in the community is the highest its ever been because of your committment to execute the primary mission of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and all its Posts': help Veterans and their Families, honor our deceased Comrades in Arms, and serve our community. As a soon to be Past Post Commander I will continue to assist Comrade Walden and the incoming leadership team any way I can to ensure our Post succeeds. I also have the honor of serving on the Department of Texas VFW State Legislative Committee next year and will be advocating for the interests of Veterans and military families during the 2021 Texas Legislative Session. We have much to fight for in at the state capitol in Austin and in Washington, DC.
Also, a reminder that our Post Canteen has been open since Friday, May 22 with some limitations in place such as social distancing. Finally, as we've always done for several years, members of our Post participated in the 28th Annual Texas VFW District 28 Memorial Day ceremony on Monday at Cooke-Walden Cemetery in Pflugerville--Dave Walden, Terry Craig, Dave Stading, and myself. We also conducted a Memorial Day Ceremony at the Post on Monday. Stand by for a June 2020 Post calendar as we are now able to conduct some events at the Post.
I wish each of you and your families the best regards. Stay safe.
Yours in Comradeship,
VFW Post 10427

National VFW Aide-de-Camp, 2019-2020
I hope all is well with you and your families during this time. Please continue to stay safe and follow the orders and guidelines of your county and city as appropriate. Obviously the Covid-19 pandemic has affected Post operations. We are hoping to be able to meet in person and operate the canteen in May, but that decision is subject to guidelines from the Williamson County Judge about the current limitations and restrictions in place on bar and restaurant operations and limitations on mass gatherings (defined as more than 10 persons).
Someone in the Post leadership is checking on the Post property daily. The Post property is in great shape and all the recent rain has the grass looking great. Additonally the Post House Committee has conducted two meetings via Zoom, including the regularly scheduled April House Committee meeting last night.
Several big events scheduled in May at the Post and our Rental Hall have been postponed or cancelled:
Wilco Blue Star Mothers Fundraiser scheduled for May 2 cancelled. Working on a date in late summer or early fall.
VFW District 28 meeting: rescheduled from May 3 to June 7 (subject to orders/guidelines from Williamson County).
Chad O Foundation Fundraiser postponed from May 16 to a date TBD.
VFW Military Order of the Cootie Grand (Texas) Convention scheduled for May 29-31 is cancelled. Business meeting will be conducted via Zoom.
The Department of Texas VFW Convention scheduled in Austin for mid-June is still on but the National VFW Convention scheduled in mid-July in Reno, NV was cancelled this week.
Two of the four VPR ceremonies that are required for all Posts to retain their Charter are in May: Loyalty Day on May 1 and Memorial Day on May 25. Until further guidance is issued from Williamson County, the plan is for me or someone else to conduct this ceremony via Facebook live from the Post Facebook page IAW the aforementioned guidelines from Williamson County.
The Covid-19 pandemic has affected elections in the entire VFW structure--especially at this point the District and Post levels. Guidance from National VFW and Department of Texas VFW is to keep all officers in place until an election can be conducted. Our Post, like a large majority of Posts, does not have procedures in place to conduct an election via a virtual platform such as Zoom or GoToMeeting and therefore cannot conduct an election in this manner. We will hold the Post elections at the May 25 meeting (nominate and elect in this meeting) if we are authorized to meet in person IAW with Williamson County orders/guidelines. More to follow on this in the weeks ahead based on actions taken by Williamson County and further guidance from National VFW and Department of Texas VFW.
We will conduct our regular Post meeting with a physical quorum of seven Post officers (our Post By-Laws require a quorum of six to conduct a meeting) at the Post on Monday, April 27. We will all be wearing masks and practicing social distancing. Remember we are prohibited from having more than 10 persons gathered at the Post. The rest of the membership is invited to attend the meeting virtually via the Zoom information listed below:
Anyone needing assistance, QM Gene Davenport will be up on the meeting about 1845. When you come into the meeting you will be in a waiting room until Gene authenticates you in - so just be patient - He'll get to you
For security reasons we will lock the meeting down at 1910 hrs - 710 pm

I would like thank all the Posts and Auxiliaries of District 28 for their support, donations and efforts in making this years Homeless Veterans Stand Down a huge success!!
It is the efforts of the District Post and Auxiliary members that make the stand down a very successful event.
Yesterday. 35 homeless veterans and 17 veterans in transitional housing received much needed services and clothing for a total of 52.
A special thank you to Post 856 for hosting the stand down!!! Ron Dorsey, Larry Yeager, Don and Freddie were instrumental in making this event happen. It is a great deal of work and I greatly appreciated their efforts.
Thank you to Leander Post 10427 for all of their efforts in feeding the veterans and staff. This is another huge task and Terry Craig and company did a fantastic job.
Thank you to Post and Auxiliary members from 10427, 4443,9078,8587, 8787, 8925 and 3377 for their outstanding efforts in handing out clothing and cold weather gear to the veterans. Each volunteer spoke with each veteran and made a difference yesterday!!!
Thank you to department and the Texas VFW Foundation for funding a majority of the Stand Down.
A special thank you to District 28 to buy 400 discount bus passes for the homeless veterans. This is a much needed item and all were very grateful.
A special special thank you to Red and Linda Towers for all of the hard work they have done throughout the years on the stand down. They provided us excellent instructions and guidance that great help this event be successful.
I would like to say thank you to Kim Gear for her support and efforts for the stand down.

Another great and busy month is ahead of us. Please note the VFW 120th Birthday Celebration on Thursday, October 3 (the actual VFW Birthday is September 29) and the Operation Enduring Freedom VPR on October 11 and Recognition of Women in Military Service VPR on October 18.
If any of you would like to get an overview of the VFW and Post operations, see Post Sr. Vice Commander Robert Beach who will be conducting a new member orientation on Tuesday, 8 Oct - 7pm - 8pm.
Also, the Post is continuing our great tradition of hosting a fundraiser/benefit for the Chad O Foundation for PTSD Awareness on October 12.
September saw some great activities at the Post:
We conducted a VJ Day VPR on September 2 and a September 11 Remembrance/Patriots Day VPR at the Leander Police Department with Leander City officials including the Mayor and Leander Police Officers and Firefighters. We also conducted the September 11 ceremony at the Post. We got coverage of the ceremony at the Leander PD in the Hill Country newspaper.
The Post assisted with the cost and arrangements for the funeral of Mr. Mark Walker of Leander, an unaccompanied Veteran. The funeral was held on September 26 in Cedar Park with burial at the Central Texas Veterans Cemetery in Killeen. This request was made at the request of Williamson County Judge Bill Gravell and Williamson County and we were honored and pleased to do so.. The Post was covered in the Hill Country News newspaper for this and will be covered in the Williamson County Sun (published in Georgetown).
Also, the Post Auxiliary held its largest and most successful Barbecue Cook-off (15th Annual) to date September 27-28. 68 Cooker teams participated--by far exceeding the highest ever (previous record was 46 teams last year). Bob Picket with KVET radio station interviewed Post Auxiliary Sr. Vice President Norm Adams and me during the Cook-off on September 28.
We look forward to seeing you at your Post this month!

Answer's The Call For A Veteran
The Williamson County Commissioners Court vote Sept. 17 to pay for the funeral of a Leander veteran who died with no known family members and is inviting the public to attend his funeral this Thursday in Cedar Park.
Mark Lyle Walker, 58, died on Aug. 25 and was subsequently listed as an "unaccompanied veteran" when no known family members could be located.
He served as a submariner in the U.S. Navy, according to the obituary by Beck Funeral Home. The service on Thursday will be held 9 a.m. at the funeral home, which is located at 1700 E. Whitestone in Cedar Park.
A burial with full military honors will happen that same day at 11 a.m. at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
“There are a lot of things that we do that are important, but I’m going to take time off on that day,” Williamson County Judge Bill Gravell said during the commissioners court meeting on Sept. 17. “I’m going to go to a funeral of a man I do not know, but a man who served our nation faithfully. Following that, I will go to the burial because I believe that everyone who dies in Williamson County deserves someone to walk with them to that very last place.”
Walker lived with a friend “who was gracious to take him in" prior to his death, according to Gravell.
As Mr. Walker died with no known family, the funeral is being paid for by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10427 of Leander and Beck Funeral Home. Williamson County is contributing the standard $300 allotted for indigent burials.
“VFW Post 10427 is pleased to work with Williamson County to honor Mr. Walker’s service to our country,” said Mitch Fuller, commander of VFW Post 10427.
To view the obituary or send condolences, go to https://www.beckchapels.com/obituary/mark-walker.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VFW Post 10427 in Leander to help with this service as well as other needs for veterans. Mail donations to VFW Post 10427, 8760 RR 2243, Leander, Texas 78641.
