Letters from Troops

Your package just came in and it blew us completely away!! Thank you so much for the efforts your school went through to make that video for us. I have made several copies and just handed them out. We will be sending you a message back through the mail but I wanted to contact you as soon as possible because your gave us 1100 reasons why we serve and protect our nation! I have just signed up to anysoldier.com but of the things I have received this by far has meant the most. Thank you again and just for the record we loved motivation when the timeline was presented on the DVD. The civil war was awesome. You will hear from us soon. God bless!

Dear Students and Staff of Running Brushy Middle School,

Thank you and all your students for their support.  I am working currently as the Officer in Charge of a convoy support team.  Our job is to coordinate the loading and unloading of convoys, and to make sure they have everything they need.  We show them where they need to go on our post, and help schedule maintenance for their trucks.  I am the father of five children and I live in Kaukauna WI.  I have been in the Army reserve for 22 years, and this is my second deployment.  When I am home, I work as a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.  I am attaching a picture of my family, and one of me over here.

Wow, you all did a great job on the movie.  We have a large warehouse here that the drivers sleep in.  I will post your cards and letters there, and share your movie with as many soldiers as I can.

It is a great blessing for me to be able to share your Love with our soldiers.

Thank you for your prayers and support.

God Bless,

CW3 David A. Dreger

Miss Wyatt,

My name is SSG Matthew Boyles and I am currently serving in Baghdad, Iraq with the 1st Cavalry Division.  I am writing on behalf of myself and the other Soldiers I work with.  We received the package from your class yesterday, the day before Thanksgiving, and I have already shared the DVD with several soldiers that I work with.  Everyone was inspired by the DVD and the several letters and card that we received.  I have posted the cards and letters in a common area so all the Soldiers that pass can see them.

We are doing well over here, proud of the fact that we can support our country.  Thank you for the support that you have given us in the holiday season.

Dear Miss Wyatt,

I received your classes care package with the DVD.  Please pass my thanks along to the students.  I have it playing right now, and I must say it chokes me up to see how much your community supports us.

With your permission, I'd like to copy our DVD down to our network server so all the airmen, soldiers, and sailors here can watch it at their convenience.

Your package arrived just in time for Thanksgiving.  The weather has changed here, and it is getting quite a bit wetter and colder.  We are stationed outside of Kabul, Afghanistan.  The altitude here is around 6000 feet and we are surrounded by mountains.  Some already have snow on them and I expect there will be more soon.

I belong to a 5-man team that works with the Afghan National Army’s Training Command.  Our job is to help the Afghan’s standardize the way they train soldiers and help them build courses they can sustain once we are gone.  We are imbedded with them, which means we work with them on a daily basis.  We also work _outside the wire_, which means we leave our small camp daily to go to work with them.  We provide our own security, which made us nervous at first.  It takes a little getting used to, but we are relatively safe compared to the troops in Iraq.  Our team consists of an intelligence officer, two space/missile officers, one acquisitions officer (a guy who buys stuff), and I’m a comm/info guy (computer geek.)  We weren’t picked to come here because of our specialties, some are volunteers and some were volun-told.  We’re here for one year, and hopefully we’ll be home by the time summer starts.

I am a Texas native, born and raised in Garland, Texas.  I lived there until I joined the Air Force in 1983.  I served as an enlisted Airman for 16 years, and then decided to get my commission.  My current rank is Captain.  When I'm not here in Afghanistan, I live and work in Oklahoma City at Tinker AFB.  I'm a software engineer, and I lead a team of 40 Airmen and civilians who write all the software for the AWACS RADAR planes.  I know what you are thinking, but OK is OK.  I even met my wife here, so I'll always have something great associate with this place.

Your video was great.  And surprisingly enough, making videos is a hobby of mine.  I'm a skydiver, and fly with my camera.  I also enjoy shooting footage where ever I travel.  It's a bit harder out here, not much time.  I loved what you guys did, and I'm sure it means the world to anyone who receives it.

Please pass on special thanks to all the young folks who worked so hard to put it together, as well as Stephanie Roberts, Elijah Sherrod, Shara, Stephen, (and maybe Wyatt?)  for including notes and cards.

If you have any questions about what we do, or want to see particular pictures let me know.  I've attached two.  The first is of me right before we went out on a convoy, and the second is of the AWACS aircraft.  I will send you a link to other pictures soon (from Snapfish).

Thanks Again!

Lisa, that you so much for the letters and CD.  I couldn't get the movie to play, just the music.  I'll have to try on another computer.  Anyhow, it was very thoughtful of you and the kids, I really appreciated it and so did the other soldiers in the office.  The Flag has been hung up for all to see.

Just a little about myself, I'm a Warrant Officer in the Intelligence field.  I've spent 4 yrs active duty and 14years in the Oregon Army National Guard.  I'm married, 22years, and have two daughters.  My daughters are 16 and 18, the 18 year old is also in the Oregon Army National Guard.  I live in Oregon, I was an Army Brat when I was young, but I was born in El Paso TX, so I guess you could say I'm a Texan.

The holiday's are rough, but I believe in what we are doing here and I have hope for the people of Afghanistan.  As you read the letters I'm attaching to this email you'll understand our need to be here, besides the terrorist that want to train here and then cause terrorist acts in the US.

Here's is a website for a project we have been working on to help out this school.  It has photos of the school and kids, your class may be interested in this.

Dear Lisa Wyatt,

I had the wonderful privilege and opportunity to watch the video that you and your students made.  I can’t express how amazing it was.  By now I am sure you have received hundreds of thanks notes, if not you will.  My unit is stationed in Baghdad, Iraq.  We run Ibn Sina hospital in the International Zone (Green Zone).  We treat wounded soldiers and prepare them to head back to the states or return back to duty.

We are going to make copies of your DVD and give it to the wounded soldiers.  I am positive it will lift their spirits.  One important avenue of care is psychological.  With ease of mind comes ease body (and pain too).

So again, I just want to thank you for all the time, energy, and creativity that came together to make that project possible.  When we are struggling with the “whys” of war, reminders like these are all we need!

On Behalf of All Our Soldiers,

PFC Woods

Good afternoon ma'am. I received a package from your school today. I had had a very rough day with a bad mission and almost didn't open your package right away. I am glad I did though cause after the letters and DVD I am once again reminded of those who care and why I put my life on the line every day. My name is Specialist Jeremy Degraw and I am with the 1-18 army infantry division. My units purpose is combat. We drive around all day in Iraq trying to find bombs that have been placed and draw fire from the other units trying to transport or rebuild Iraq. On average we get shot at or blown up once a week. No need to worry though other then being a little rattled we stay safe. Our vehicles have allot of armor and keep us safe most of the time.

I cant help feeling that the email I am sending is so inadequate compared to the package you sent. We wish we could do something as nice for you guys but our daily jobs are not something to be seen and often a little scary for the normal person. Know this though we truly appreciate all the have done for us and we could never ask for more. Knowing you are out there supporting us is our motivation to complete or jobs day after day. We hope to never disappoint you or let you down. We will fight till the end and some have proven this already from my unit. We are sad that they are gone but we do not let ourselves slow down. Their bravery and selfless service is what strives us to work harder then we had to before so that they did not die in vain. Everyday is another new day , but the mission for us remains the same. Protect the freedom and rights of those around us who cannot do it themselves. For this we stay and stand firm.

Once again i along with the rest of my team would like to thank you again for your thoughts, time and devotion to us. It does not fall on deaf ears. You are what keep us going. Thank you so  much for your support and i look forward to hearing from you again.

SPC jeremy degraw
